TIPS FOR OUR LARGE FAMILY PHOTO SHOOT

Remember making beautiful images with large groups/families works best when everyone is wearing clothing that works together. We are not necessarily suggesting that everyone needs to wear perfectly matching outfits, but more that the entire group looks cohesive.

Start by communicating a plan with the family in terms of general guidelines for what to wear. You can do this by choosing a pallet of about three to five colors. Start by choosing two neutral colors. Neutral colors are colors that can and then choose a few complimentary colors.

Lets say you choose navy and charcoal gray as your neutral colors. Then choose a few other colors that compliment your neutrals. That great thing about neutrals

Then decide what kind of general look and feel you are going for. Is it casual, or more formal?

Remember you will likely display your beautiful family images for years, you may want to consider choosing clothing styles that have a timeless classic look.

Have fun with your clothing style. The photo shoot is about you and your family, so personalize your look to reflect your style.

Choose colors that work well together and are rich in tone.

WHAT ARE THE BEST COLORS TO WEAR?
Rich, saturated colors photograph very well. Deep purple, sapphire blue, turquoise, red and emerald green are great choices. Pair these jewel tones with neutrals like gray, navy, brown, tan, beige.

Dark denim can act as a neutral and photographs beautifully. Bright, intense colors that are rich in tone are also great choices. Try paring these colors with textured clothing, and create a dynamic look.

SAY “NO” TO PASTEL COLORS PLEASE
Pastels such as light pink, powder blue or light yellow are not suggested. Black and white should be used sparingly, as they generally do not photograph well.

White can work when used in small amounts and under layers.

LAYERING CLOTHING
Layering clothing is a great way to create images that have depth and interest. Outside photoshoots in the colder months

TEXTURE
Choose clothing that is playful and full of texture. Textured fabrics photograph beautifully — denim, sweaters, corduroy, linen and eyelet dresses are excellent choices. Some more ideas may include ruffles, ribbing, buttons, and patterns.

ACCESSORIES
Use accessories to jazz up an outfit. By using hats, scarves, hair pieces, bags, a chunky scarf, a busy necktie, a swanky pair of boots, a thick belt or an interesting necklace (chunky jewelry is preferred), an image will instantly become more unique and interesting. We can remove, adjust, and add elements to an outfit to create a variety of styles.

JEWELRY
Jewelry is a great accessory, and can add interest to an image. When choosing necklaces, try to avoid jewelry that is tiny and fragile, as it won’t show up in the images and will likely blend into the skin tone. Jewelry that is chunky or larger will show up and can make a statement if you want it to. Large dangling earring can work depending on what kind of looking you are going for. Or you can choose a smaller more classic look like studs or pearls.

WHEN THE COLOR WHITE WORKS
White can work if used in layering, for example instead of wearing a white shirt, add another layer like a blazer, jacket or cardigan in a different color, this will some contrast and look great.

WHEN THE COLOR BLACK WORKS
Please using the color black sparingly. Generally speaking the color black photographs a bit “flat”. Try to avoid looks that are completely black. Navy or charcoal gray are great alternatives for the color black and photographs beautifully.
